Financial Advice: Divorce Proof Your Marriage

This is Nathaniel B. Thank you for landing on my page. Allow me to introduce myself. I am a bank manager who has been happily married for the over thirty years. I am grateful that my job and stable marriage have allowed me to become financially comfortable in middle-age. Unfortunately, many of my clients have not been so lucky. I listen in despair as I hear the familiar tale. They got divorced, rushed headlong into second marriages that also broke down, and ended up with major debts. My exasperation stems from the fact that a few legal precautions before racing up the aisle would have allowed my clients to remain solvent. I have compiled this blog to highlight the importance of having a good lawyer in your life. I hope you find the advice interesting and it motivates you to explore legal issues when making life decisions. Take care.

Advice on how to choose the best divorce lawyer

A divorce is normally a difficult process for all of those involved. However, it can be made a lot easier by choosing a lawyer that is experienced and will do their upmost to smooth over the divorce while catering for your needs. Most people that are going through a divorce have no prior experience of it and it can be quite an intimidating process.

If you choose the wrong lawyer, it can be quiet an expensive mistake as you may not get everything you are entitled to. It can be hard to know why you should look for in a divorce lawyer so here are some tips to make the right choice.

Stay realistic

Divorce is a legal process that is designed to adequately split the assets of the husband and wife fairly. The divorce lawyer's job is to represent your interests to the best of their ability. They are not a superhero; they can't magically grant all of your wishes. Divorce is about compromise—you have to give up certain things in exchange for others.

They are not a trained therapist, so you should try to avoid telling them about all of your emotions and frustrations as this will only waste their time and your money. The clock will be ticking during your sessions with the lawyer so you don't want to waste it. They have been through the process many times before so they already know what the people involved go through.

Stay focused

Your main goal throughout this process is to get divorced without having any major depreciations to the quality of your life. There may be a custody battle for your kids, something that cannot be understated. Try not to let your emotions rule over your judgement, it is important to keep a clear head and focused on your overall goal.

While you want to have as little financial damage as possible, in the long term scheme of things, it is not as important as being free from a toxic relationship. This is where the focus of your divorce lawyer should lie rather than trying to milk your spouse for everything they have.

Always look for red flags

After you have narrowed down your divorce lawyer options to a couple of candidates, it is time to check their backgrounds to ensure that no previous trouble or red flags are thrown up. On the surface they may seem to be pleasant and good natured, but you never know what is lurking inside, underneath the façade.

Make sure that the lawyer never discloses confidential information to you about clients or makes guarantees to you. There are never any guarantees when it comes to the law, there can always be a curve ball thrown at you. You don't want to deal with someone who is constantly dodging and not answering your calls and messages.
